The 1997 London Marathon

Gerrard McMahon

This year the MGA had six runners trying to raise as much sponsorship money as possible, but of course they all had to finish the race first!

Kevin Sussex whose sister Serena is Secretary of the Redbridge branch, was determined to beat his previous best time. This he duly did by over 15 minutes completing the course in 3 hours 10 minutes. He also raised over £800 in the process.

Pharmacist Stewart Clarkson was persuaded by Peg Barker from Alsager to run for the MGA. He would sometimes train in the very early hours of the morning before starting work. His finishing time was under 3 and a half hours and they both managed to raise just over £808 between them.

David Moxon from Chelmsford had already run 11 marathons, but he didn't have a charity to run for this year until a family friend, Lynsay Rix from Hornchurch, suggested the MGA. He completed the race in 3 hrs 18 mins and has raised over £150. Hopefully this will be doubled via his company's charity scheme.

Our youngest entrant was 14 years old Ross-Paul Jenner. He ran in the 1996 Junior London Marathon, but wanted to run for a charity in 1997. He had a word with his grandmother, who is a friend of Gill Davis from the SE London and Kent branch, and she suggested the MGA. Ross-Paul collected a sponsorship total of £173. Well done!

David Dickson raised a fantastic £1060.

Do you use your MGA mugs? Gillian Hughes, the MGA Clwyd Representative, does and so when a friend of her daughters came over for a cup of tea he asked what the MGA was all about. After hearing all about MG and the MGA Filippo Faralla said that he was running in the London Marathon and would now run for the MGA! He raised £515 and Gillian £148. Not a bad return for an MGA mug of tea.

A big thank you to all our runners and their sponsors from everyone at the MGA.
