ASK (Help for the Young)

ASK (A registered charity) has produced an information pack for young people with a disability or special need.

Growing up, leaving school and making your way in an adult world is a difficult time for all young people and their families. For those with disabilities or special needs, this can be a particularly daunting time.

The aim of ASK's pack is to give a starting point for gathering information and making plans. Originally designed for Wiltshire's school-leavers, the pack is now available in a national format for England and Wales.

The pack was produced in response to requests from families and carers for more information for school-leavers with disabilities.

The Pack was compiled and edited by a parent/carer in association with Wiltshire Education and Social Services Departments.

The Pack covers the following subjects :-

  • Planning for Transition: the Education Annual reviews and how they contribute to planning for adulthood; the involvement of different agencies. Includes a brief overview of the Disabled Persons Act.
  • Looking Ahead: this section looks at the various options for further education, personal care, living options, leisure and holiday. There is a section on benefits for those aged over 16 years.
  • Useful Contacts: a National directory of useful addresses (including Internet Websites where available) for further information, advice and support.
